We are blessed to work with amazing designers and artisans from the Bay Area as well as around the world. We wanted to share with you the stories behind the products you will find on our site as well as in our shop. We are always on the lookout for new artisans, with a focus on fair-trade and sustainability.

WE WANT TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

for our people and our planet, one handmade piece at a time. We use design and business as a tool to educate and employ underserved artisans in Africa by providing skills training and a market connection. Nearly all of our pieces are designed in our Portland, Oregon studio and delicately made by our artisans Africa.

OUR MISSION IS SIMPLE.

Combine modern design with traditional techniques to create mindful home and lifestyle products. With the purchase of our goods, we create opportunities for six women’s co-ops and several independent artisans across Africa. Our makers are provided with skills training, market access, fair pay, a collaborative work environment, and a path for economic independence.

We are creating jobs, promoting education, and improving the quality of life in Africa.

ANECDOTE CANDLES

At Anecdote, we’re making fragrance a conversation piece. Inspired by personal recollections and cultural trends, each candle is an everyday luxury designed to remind us of stories worth sharing.

Our packaging is modern and playful, but we take quality seriously. All candles are hand-poured in the USA using natural ingredients with no additives, dyes, or preservatives. Our coconut-soy wax, cotton core wicks, and premium phthalate-free fragrance oils create a clean burn and powerful scent throw. We invite you to share our stories and create your own!

THE POWER OF STORYTELLING.

Every candle begins with a story — an anecdote. We bring customers into the product development process by crowdsourcing ideas for new concepts and encouraging customers to share their favorite memories and pastimes to help write the next story.

THE SCIENCE OF FRAGRANCE.

We work with various perfumers to develop fragrances that capture the essence of the moment we want to convey. We go through many, many variations to make sure the aromas are unique, yet familiar.

THE ART OF CANDLEMAKING.

Candles are simple products, but candle making is not. We spend months testing multiple variants of the fragrance, wicks, and wax blends to create the perfect candle and to preserve the olfactive integrity of the fragrance.

ATTALIE DEXTER

Attalie Dexter Home + Accessories is designed and produced by Attalie in Los Angeles, CA. The line began in 2009 with one-of-a-kind jewelry formed with reclaimed materials and has evolved to limited edition collections and home accessories.

Each piece is individually handmade with a focus on modern organic design and high end components. Materials are thoughtfully sourced from female owned and small businesses as much as possible.

With a degree in multimedia arts, Attalie has a background in a range of mediums including ceramic, metal sculpture, film, fiber, and digital arts.

Attalie's work has been featured in Vogue, Elle Decor, Apartment Therapy, Lonny, Sight Unseen, Refinery 29, Domino and more.

AWKWARD AUNTIE

I'm a 30-something who essentially splits her time between Texas and New England. Hands down my favorite thing in life so far is being an auntie. I thought my heart could only grow so big, but every time a sibling or friend has a baby I'm proven wrong -- I never knew I had so much love to give!

What initially started as a place share my thoughts and experiences as an auntie (through blood AND love) has turned into a different kind of creative outlet for me. In the second half of 2018, I began using cement as my medium to create fun planters and candles. It turns out my biggest lesson in 2018 was: If I’m not creating something with my hands, I’m not happy.
